This annual celebration of all things good for built environment technology took place at the Building Centre in London during Social Media Week, on 25 September 2013. David Burden (Daden Ltd; @DavidBurden) - The Third BIM: The social built environment model
Built environment projects tend to revolve around two models - the architect's glossy fly-though and the builder's nuts-and-blots CAD and BIM model. Daden believes that there is a need for a third model, a social or users' model, owned, managed and used by the people who will have to use the building when it's complete. Using recent work on the new Library of Birmingham David Burden will look at how immersive 3D environments are potentially the ideal place for such a social model.
Duncan Reed (Tekla; @djhreed67) - Sharing BIM data through social media
The world is awash with data, and while few fully understand all the ramifications of Big Data, we need to understand and manage this in a construction context. Social media applications offer many ways to share data so why not BIM data too? So do we need a structured data approach to SM, or is this by its very nature an oxymoron?
Andy Hudson-Smith (@digitalurban) - Smart Cities: BIM / GIS and the Internet of Things
Andy Hudson-Smith will look at the rise of the Internet of Things and its implications for pulling together BIM, Geographical Information Systems and Augmented Reality as a move towards Smart Buildings and Smart Cities.
Anne Parker (@AnneHydeParker) - 'The Cuddle Hormone': Mindfulness, Sustainable Construction and Social Media
Mindfulness, brain training, positive thinking – all kinds of variations of managing the mind abound at the moment. But how do they relate to construction? And how do they relate to sustainable construction? Anne Parker will demonstrate how individuals can learn to draw on different parts of the brain for different types of thinking. She will explain how the particular type of thinking that is long term, strategic and compassionate can be developed within an individual or a company – and how this can impact on projects, design and collaborative working.
Gordon O'Neill (Iota Media; @iota_gordon) - Don't Tell Stories?
Story-telling is often used as another term for lying but story-telling lies at the heart of who we are and what we do. Every week we tell stories, if not to other people to ourselves. Stories lie at the heart of all communication, storytelling in its various forms not only enriches our lives but enhances how we view the environment in which we live. We all have a story to tell and we are all, whether we know it or not, story-tellers. The environment we create and inhabit are part of the story: a story that involves all who inhabit and interact with their environment for good or bad.
Robert Klaschka (Studio Klaschka; @StudioKlaschka) - The future of BIM is open - or: Is Proprietary BIM Unsustainable?
BIM authoring, editing and analysis software and proprietary file formats being tied together has almost become something which we accept and expect as a necessity for having the best functionality and integration. However as the remit of interoperable BIM expands outside the realm of consultants and contractors into specialists consultants, sub-contractors, facilities managers (and anyone else in fact), lock-in to a platform becomes more and more unsustainable. By comparing the historic examples of telephony (proprietary) and internet (open) protocols, in which the clear winner for scope and innovation was the internet (telephony is now only a subset), Robert will show why the way BIM is stored must remain open to enable valuable innovative services we haven't thought of yet.
Claire Thirlwall (Thirlwall Associates; @ThirlwallAssoc) - From social media cynic to addict
Claire looked at how she went from social media cynic, dismissive of the role of social media, to being listed in Building Design’s Twitter100 most useful tweeters in architecture. She explained why she believes that social media is the most important sales tool for businesses in the built environment sector and how owner-managed practices have an advantage over larger corporates.
