Do you know the way to San Jose?

I always said surveying was ‘the best job in the world’. Every day different, and best of all, I’d spend most of my day in the fresh air, sometimes with just my dog, Pru, for company and at other times in a trench, marking foundations with a dozen bricklayers waiting to lay their blocks, and generally having a jolly old time doing it. And getting paid to do it too! I never thought of myself as ‘flying the flag for women in Construction ‘– I was simply one of the lads, and got on with my job.…See More

My nomination for BE2Campstar is Rob Scott, John Lyall Architects

I started following Rob when I found him on Twitter, tweeting about A4E, Architects for Education.Over the next few weeks/months, Rob followed the antics of COYO, and then started his own fascinating blog about the life of an architect which I often read, and so do many of the kids we work with. It's great to get inside an architects head, contrary to popular belief!, and I hope that other construction professionals will follow suit. After meeting Rob in London at the Stickyworld seminar down in…See More

Kids and The Big Society

The road to success as a social entrepreneur is never (and will never) be an easy one when your first consideration really is '"what's in it for the kids/community" rather than "will this pay for me to go on that nice Umbrian holiday this year". In fact, I rather think the other half has given up on me ever being profit driven. I guess that's how I'm measured, not in fiscal terms, but in how much I'm giving back to the community as a businesswoman.

However, here's something quite… Continue

Hi Alison! sorry it's taken me so long to get back. I'm going to visit the 'it's my city too!' people on sunday as part of the architecture festival. They're all between 12 and 19 and have developed their own manifesto for what they want from the built environment. I don't know if you're aware of them already but it would be really interesting to find out where their initiative is coming from and how they're educating themselves on the built environment.

Now I'm a bit more settled in here at slider, it would be great to talk sometime soon on what you're doing at the moment at CoYO and where you're heading! I'd really like to support the development of built environment education from the architecture side.
