Profile Information

About Me
I am a PR professional, marketing and social media practitioner who has worked in the architecture, engineering and construction market since 1987, with more than a decade's experience in construction ICT.

Until May 2009, I worked for BIW Technologies, one of the UK's leading providers of SaaS-based construction collaboration technologies - AKA 'project extranets' (before that, I ran my own PR and marketing business following 11 years with the Halcrow group and Tarmac Professional Services). I wrote the UK's first guide to these technologies, published in 2005, and have been involved in various IT related initiatives by, among others, the Network of Construction Collaboration Technology Providers and Constructing Excellence.

I also write about AEC technologies, particularly in Software-as-a-Service, on my blog at www.extranetevolution.com. At BIW, I set up the company's intranet and wiki, started a blog and introduced RSS feeds, Twitter and YouTube into our communications. More recently, I started a new PR/marketing/Web2.0/AEC blog.

With Martin Brown and others, I helped co-found what we know as be2camp in early 2008 and as part of the team of 'unorganisers' we have, I hope, risen to the challenge, learning much as we go along.

ThinkBIM reaches wide

Posted on April 24, 2013 at 9:45 0 Comments

The continued success of Leeds Metropolitan University's ThinkBIM events (organised by the Centre for Knowledge Exchange and facilitated by the BE2 team) saw last week's event reach out across the UK and around the world via social media. A quick look at the Twitter stats for the #tbim2013 hashtag (via Tweetreach) suggests the most recent 50 tweets (of an estimated 277) reached 36,114 accounts, with over 90,000…

DesigningBuildings: a wiki - and a content marketing and advertising opportunity

Posted on April 2, 2013 at 9:00 0 Comments

I am a long-time Wikipedian, and as a construction PR professional and occasional public speaker on B2B use of social media in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector, I will talk to businesses about using Wikipedia to share information. However, I am often confronted by individuals’ and companies’ frustration that they haven’t been able to get their content accepted by other Wikipedia editors. However, particularly for subjects which may be too industry-specific…

HonestBuildings: Facebook for buildings

Posted on March 28, 2013 at 16:37 0 Comments

Honest Buildings, launched in the UK last month, puts buildings at the heart of its connections, with their energy efficiency open to scrutiny, encouraging owners and suppliers to demonstrate their carbon reduction commitments.

Honest Buildings, a US-based property network that connects decision makers to service providers for millions of commercial buildings, is…

Hi, Paul

I was just looking at the Natural Resource Charter homepage http://www.naturalresourcecharter.org/ and it has (scroll down) a Find Us on Facebook plugin.

My work in Dundee has taken on an economic development angle once again (hence a link to the built environment alongside other aspects), where the extractive industires are the driver for such development.  There are (thus far) three Ning sites that I am interested in linking to from our website http://www.eisourcebook.org once I have a Resources page up and running there.  These 3 ning sites are: Be2Camp, Gender in Value Chains http://genderinvaluechains.ning.com/, and GOXI, http://goxi.org/, which is Governance in Value Chains.

Anyway, my question is whether there is HTML embed code that I can use for Ning sites, starting off with be2camp, that does the same thing as the Find Us on Facebook plugin at http://www.naturalresourcecharter.org/

Is this something that you can advise on, please?

Many thanks

Daniel

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your warm welcome, I also enjoyed our meeitng a couple of weeks ago, and hope there will be opportunities to collaborate in the future. Unfortunately I am not able to make the next event, but will be at the event in Birmingham if at all possible - it is in my diary.

Definitely. The life-blood of Be2camp comes from two sources: online and face-to-face - with the latter feeding the former. Would be good to have you involved with our event plans for early 2010 (maybe come and speak at our February SMW event - just provisionally announced?) or maybe look at doing a Be2camp/Reorb in Scotland?

Thanks for the welcome Paul! We're really keen on building lots of features into Reorb to encourage sustainable development / redevelopment of commercial properties. Maybe we could have a chat in the new year about that and about running a joint web event?

Hi Paul,

How are you? It is really great to see such nice words on my wall. Many thanks for your kind greetings. That is very nice of you!

Sorry for the late reply, has been quite busy meeting several deadlines at this moment. Just curious, who are the main populations of Be2Camp, are they all architects, Construction Consultants, IT experts, Academics of architectual or others? Is it only a networking online group for AEC professionals to know each other, or do we hold regular online forum to discuss various opportunities?

Sorry to ask so many questions, hope you don't mind.^_^

Your early reply and warmhearted help will be highly appreciated.

All the best and take care,

Christina Yan Zhang^_^
